Certain foods have got a bit of a bad rep in the health and fitness world but, the truth is, a lot of these ‘unhealthy foods’ aren’t actually unhealthy.

Here are some foods you might be avoiding and why you might want to consider adding them to your diet.

Bread might be considered ‘unhealthy’, but it actually comes with a fair few health benefits. Wholegrain bread is packed full of vitamins, minerals, fibre and even protein! All of these are super important parts of your diet. 

Don’t go cutting off the crust - recent studies have also revealed that the crust of bread is a rich source of antioxidants. 


Don’t feel you have to pass on the cheese board! 

Not only is cheese delicious, but it is also an excellent source of calcium, which is essential for your bone health, and has potential anti-inflammatory properties. 

Egg Yolks

Sacrificing the yolks to make your morning omelette? It turns out you might not have to.

Eggs yolks are one of the best sources of a nutrient called choline, which helps to produce serotonin and dopamine. 

They are also rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, which have been shown to help protect your vision. 


Good news - you don’t have to avoid chocolate to lead a ‘healthy’ lifestyle.

Chocolate is packed full of magnesium, which contributes to energy creation, protein formation and the regulation of the nervous system. Recent studies have also shown that dark chocolate can help to reduce stress, improve memory and boost your mood due to its high cacao percentage.

Probably one of the most versatile foods, potatoes are a great source of vitamins C and B6. Save yourself a job and don’t bother peeling them and they’re also a pretty good source of fibre. 

Healthy and unhealthy is too simple a dichotomy – some foods are more nutritious than others, but anything eaten in moderation is not ‘unhealthy’. 

Labelling a diet healthy or unhealthy is more about the bigger picture than one food component within it.
