LA: 4 Things To Do That Don't Involve The Hollywood Hype

Surprising as it may be - there is a thriving community and culture within Los Angeles that exists beyond celebrity and cliché.

The idea that LA has no culture, no character and no soul, just doesn't cut it anymore.

Don't believe us? Find out why, right here...

EXPLORE DOWNTOWN LA

Whilst LA's central business district has often been seen as a no-no due to safety, it's exciting to see things are quickly changing. Downtown LA is undergoing its own renaissance and truth be told, there's never been a better time to appreciate the art deco buildings, old fashioned theatres and quaint and quiet parks...

THE GOLDEN AGE, IS BACK.

Our go-to place to visit, downtown: THE BROAD...

A three-storey structure with a honeycomb facade which hosts the artwork of genius': Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Robert Therrien, Cindy Sherman and Takashi Murakami.

All you need to do is search the location tag on IG to realise that reaching infinity, is possible.

FIND A BIRD

First, let us clarify - we DO NOT mean 'bird' in the pejorative. Sorry, if we got your hopes up...

Birds in LA, are an electronic scooter - so, if bikes, skateboards and the classic, old fashioned walking aren't your favourite types of street transportation - this is the next best thing.

All you need to do, is download the App, register your details and then you're free to take in the sights. Just make sure you understand American road etiquette before you scoot.

Gone are the days of Hollywood Celebrity tours on a double decker bus...

VENICE BEACH

This is where the exploration really begins.

Over the years, Venice Beach has blossomed into a hip, cultural mecca just a short drive from Central LA. It's home to the bodybuilders, the skateboarders, the rollerbladers and even the gymnasts but what you're probably not told, is that it's every man for himself.

Touted as one of the busiest beaches in peak season, the picturesque location, frequently tagged on Instagram provides every opportunity that you could wish for. From surfing to skateboarding, arts and crafts to idyllic canals - it really does have it all.

FOOD

There are a plethora of excellent restaurants in Los Angeles – many of them world famous to boot. From Dan Tana’s to Mr Chow, Boa and The Polo Lounge – L.A. has you covered.

In our experience however, it’s the unassuming eateries and diners that win every time.

Sure, five star restaurants are great but these places have character! A personal favourite is The Firehouse, Venice. A go-to venue when you're craving pancakes mid-day, and are clamouring for old fashioned service.

For something a little more health orientated - we can guarantee that The Butchers Daughter down in Abbot Kinney will blow your mind.
