We rave about nut butter a lot here on Gymshark Central. Packed full of healthy fats, loaded with vitamins and bloody delicious, it’s easy to see why.
However, let’s not beat about the bush, nut butter is expensive, not to mention companies often sneak a lot of hidden nasties in there.
To save yourself some money and control exactly what you’re spreading on your toast, why not just make your own? It’s super simple, and you can pick any nut and any flavouring that you fancy.
Here’s how to make your own nut butter at home.
First up, you need to choose your nut. This could be peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts – whatever floats your boat really.
If you can’t decide, why not throw in a mixture?
Once you have chosen your nut, you want to preheat the oven to about 350F (about 180 degrees) and spread the nuts over a rimmed baking sheet.
When the oven is preheated, you want to toast the nuts for about 10 minutes (this will vary depending on the size of the nuts). Keep an eye on them and don’t let them get too dark.
Next up, remove them from the oven and leave them to cool.
If you’ve gone for hazelnuts, now is a good time to remove any of the skins that they might have shed while they were toasting.
Once they have cooled slightly, transfer the nuts into a high-speed blender or food processor and blend until they are creamy.
This might take some time (and a bit of scraping the nuts from off the sides) but be patient. Different nuts have different amounts of fat in them (peanuts contain more fat than almonds for example), and so some may take a little longer to achieve the nut butter consistency you’re probably looking for due to this.
When you’re happy with the consistency, you can start to add other flavours.
Most people will go for a little salt, but you might also fancy adding some coconut butter, vanilla extract, or maybe even some chocolate. The latter being particularly good with hazelnuts, as you can probably imagine…
If you go for flavours some as honey or syrup, just be aware that this will change the consistency of the nut butter. If you want to avoid this, just drizzle it over the top before eating!
