6 Tips For Healthy Food Shopping On A Budget

Let's face it, we all want to eat healthy and do our best to follow a healthy diet. Healthy food shopping, however, is often associated with an expensive supermarket trip, but we're here to show you it doesn't have to be that way.

Eating healthy, fresh, whole foods is one of life's great pleasures; here's how to enjoy it without breaking the bank...

1. Buy In Bulk

You've probably heard this before, but buying your foods in bulk is key to getting value for money.

If you often find yourself hitting the shops several times a week, you're definitely not buying foods in bulk and have the potential to save money. Identify the items you eat most and explore the options for purchasing larger amounts, such as switching up 500g of beef mince for 1kg.

2. Shop Around

Whether it's car insurance, a mobile phone plan or chicken thighs... We know by now that shopping around tends to leave us with a little extra dollar in our back pocket.

If you always head to the same shop for your groceries, take note of the prices you pay and next time, try somewhere else. Most supermarkets offer online shopping so you can compare prices this way too.

3. Variety Breaks the Bank

You probably didn't want to hear this, but if you like to eat something different every single day, it will cost you. Switching up your food each week is much more cost effective than doing so daily.

So, buy the fundamentals in bulk to save money, enjoy that food for the week before switching it up for the next seven days. Variety in your diet is essential for your health, so be sure to enjoy a mix of vegetables and foods in your diet; you can keep the expensive fundamentals the same to keep the cost down.

4. Chop Your Own Food

We can all be lazy at times, so it's important to keep an eye on when our laziness may be costing us money.

If your healthy shopping list contains pre-sliced mushrooms or diced chicken breast... you're paying extra for the convenience of your food being prepared. Buy your food as close to the whole form as possible, and prepare it yourself, the way you like it.

5. Cook and Freeze

Don't throw away leftovers from your family meal, and be sure to cook several meals at once rather than just dinner for one. Buying in bulk is only cost efficient if the food gets used, throwing away as little as possible.

Most food keeps well in the fridge for several days, and if you don't have time to eat it, throw it in the freezer. You've just bagged yourself a super tasty, low-cost, homemade healthy ready meal without the abundance of salt (and preservatives) that most shop-bought ready meals have nowadays.

6. Be Flexible

Shops are always running promotional offers. Have a shopping list by all means, but be flexible with alternatives to make sure you get the best bang for your buck on the day.

You may have wanted rice, but if pasta is half price, then it's a no-brainer...

Budget Breakfast Recipe

Buying various cereals or extravagant brunches can soon start to add up. Oat based breakfasts are awesome when it comes to cutting costs and they'll give you plenty of energy to start the day. Porridge can be made with very little ingredients and you can even mix things up regularly with whatever you've got in the cupboards at the time!

Peanut butter, almonds, shredded coconut, fresh (or frozen) fruit, dark chocolate... this list goes on!

For this simple recipe, we'll be using:

Semi-skimmed milk

50g Porridge Oats

Raspberries & Blueberries

How To Make Porridge:

Add your 50g of oats into a microwaveable bowl.

Pour the semi-skimmed milk into the bowl, covering the oats by about 1 - 2cm.

Put the bowl in the microwave and heat it for 30 seconds, stir and repeat the process until you get a level of consistency you're satisfied with.

Decorate your perfect porridge with the raspberries & blueberries.
